Send Deployed Mothers a Thank You This
Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day
Nearly
122,000 mothers are among those serving in
today's US Armed Forces, the Department of
Defense estimated in 2007. Of those, at
least 7,000 are deployed in the Global War
on Terror this Mother's Day, May 11.
You can join the
Women's Memorial Foundation in thanking
mothers in military service by sending an
online Mother's Day card through the Stars
and Stripes' message service. The
independent daily newspaper of the US
military allows visitors to post free
Mother's Day messages, with photo if
desired. To post a message, visit the
Stars and Stripes Web site. |

Constitutional Common Sense Comes Back?:
Voter ID Case
Last Monday was one of those days that the
highest court in the land surprised no one
on Main Street -- when a majority of the
nine most powerful lawyers in the country
simply decided what the vast majority of the
American people already knew to be true.
On Monday, the justices of the U.S. Supreme
Court announced their decision in Crawford
v. Marion County Election Board, No. 07-21,
a case that most people know only as the
voter ID case. By a vote of 6-to-3, the
Supreme Court ruled that the State of
Indiana could require its citizens to show
photo identification when voting at their
polling places. The decision means that
other states can do the same, as several
states already have, and others will surely
follow. But, more importantly, Monday's
decision was not only a victory for
constitutional sense, it was a victory for
common sense.

From Our State Presidents
Brenda Campbell, Virginia
Our
thoughts and prayers are with those
residents of the Suffolk, Virginia area.
About 145 homes were severely damaged Monday
in Suffolk, a city of 80,000 people west of
Norfolk. As the residents returned home
Tuesday to survey the wreckage of six
tornadoes, they were amazed by both the
scope of the damage and their good fortune.
Among the 200 people injured, most suffered
only cuts and scrapes and most have been
released from the hospital. People in the
storm's path had plenty of warning and were
fortunate the strongest of the twisters
struck in the late afternoon, rather than at
night when most of the people would have
been asleep. The tornado touched down
repeatedly between 4:30 and 5 p.m. when many
people were still at work or on their way
home. Most people in the Suffolk area do
not feel lucky, they feel blessed.
